Ten Self-care tips…

Although we know self-care is important, we can often think that we don’t have time to think about ourselves, to take a break from our busy lives or just give ourselves space to take a breath.  The truth is that when we are busy, this is the most important time to practice some self-care.

The saying goes ‘you can’t pour from an empty cup’ and this is very true.  So, by taking a few minutes to unwind and re-charge your batteries, you can gain the energy to complete your next task, cope with things that go wrong or look after someone who needs it.

Here’s ten self-care tips that you can do in around 15-30 minutes:

  1. Have a warm, relaxing bath
  2. Read a few pages of your favourite book
  3. Phone a friend or relative
  4. Practice a breathing exercise
  5. Go for a walk
  6. Cook a meal
  7. Take a nap
  8. Try some mindfulness
  9. Make a brew
  10. Take a full body stretch

As well as these ten self-care tips, you could also think about how you are feeling, whether you need any support, what support would be useful and who could support you.  Alternativey, think about what would help you feel less busy – could you pan your day beforehand? Could you get your clothes ready for the next day the night before? Could you re-prioritise or ask someone else to help by taking responsibility for something on your ‘to do’ list?

As a result, by taking a few minutes each day to focus on self-care, we can maintain our wellbeing and our mental health which helps us to better cope with the ups and downs we sometimes face.  We can feel calmer and feel that we have more energy.  Focussing on what we can control, and getting organised where we can, results in a higher tolerance level when the unexpected happens and it provides us with more resources to be able to support others.
